Speaker: Lukus Counterman - In Genesis 18-19, angelic guests make two visits. They effect both miraculous beginnings and devastating endings. They serve as the messengers of hope and life to Abraham and Sarah, but bring judgment and death to the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. Paul described such a mingling in Romans 11:22 “Note then the kindness and the severity of God.” The two attributes blend in perfect harmony and both teach us about our Lord. Kindness is what we fly to, and severity is what we flee from. In our text today we will see God’s kindness demonstrated in the promise of a son to Sarah, and the rescue of Lot and his family from impending judgment. But we will also see God’s severity in the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. May we be led to praise God as a result of our encounter with His Word. May we learn to praise Him for His hatred of wickedness, His mercy on sinners, His faithfulness to believers, and His desire for intercession on behalf of others.
