Passage: Luke 5:33-6:11 Speaker: Pastor Josh MacAvoy Series: Luke - Past Promises, Present Redemption

Length: 49 mins 36 secs Plays: 338

Speaker: Josh MacAvoy - Our passage this Sunday builds on the theme of Jesus’ deity, focusing on three different interactions. At first glance, they appear to only be about religious practices and observances, but we see growing questions and intensifying scrutiny towards Jesus’ ministry. The small sparks of conflict, between Jesus and the Pharisees, is smoldering into a fire and causing quite a stir. But there is a lot more happening in this passage than we might realize at first glance. It is not just the people in the written account that should be asking questions. We too must consider what God’s word is truly teaching. We should contemplate religion’s ability to drift in both intent and practice. We should hear echos of Old Testament promises and teaching. Yes, this story touches on fasting, Sabbath observance and lawful healing. But on a deeper level, it is revealing the hearts of everyone involved. Why do they have these questions? Why do they think this way? Why did they act in this manner? We could approach this passage, asking the question “Why are you doing what you’re doing?“
