Passage: Hebrews 4:14-16 Speaker: Pastor Lukus Counterman Series: Open House
Speaker: Lukus Counterman - In the book of Hebrews, the author argues that Jesus is “better.” He is better than angels, better than Moses, he’s better than Joshua, and in our text this weekend, he’s better than any Levitical priest. Jesus’ priesthood is superior because it provides two important aspects simultaneously. There is a transcendent aspect connected to Jesus having passed through the heavens into the very presence of God. And there is a tender aspect related to Jesus’ humanity wherein he can sympathize with our frailty and weaknesses. Because Jesus is our great high priest, we can hold on to our confession of faith and we can draw near to the throne of grace in times of great difficulty. We can receive mercy to cover the sins of yesterday and grace to meet the needs of today. So let’s ask God to prepare our hearts and help us come boldly to the throne of grace when we gather together for worship.
